    John Paul II. (civil Karol Józef Wojtyła) was the 264th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church (1978-2005).

  • He was the first Pole and also the first non-Italian in this office since 1523 and was born in 1920 in Cracow. During the Nazi occupation he worked in a quarry and a chemical factory. 

    Later he obtained a doctorate in theology and philosophy and became a professor at the University of Lublin.

    In 1964 he became Archbishop of Krakow. During his pontificate he advocated dialogue between the world religions and supported the anti-communist trade union "Solidarność" in his home country.
